Meet Fatana Arifi, an Afghan Fine Art Master in her own right!

"I have taught art to many students from different countries. People in the Afghan community in the Unites States including my family and relatives mostly call me Ustad, which is the Farsi word of master or teacher.

BIOGRAPHY OF FATANA'S ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • Fatana Arifi has been recognized by the National Gallery of Afghanistan and the Afghanistan National Council of the Arts.
  • Some of her paintings may be viewed at the National Gallery of Kabul and at the Gallery of the Department of Fine Arts, Kabul University.
  • She has taught painting and water color classes at universities in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
  • She has completed many specially commissioned pieces from international organization, individuals, including the United Nations.
  • She developed her own technique called Handasism in the mid 80s.
  • A biography of Fatana is published in the 24th edition of Who’s Who of American Women 2004-2005. She has been represented by Gallery West Artists in Virginia, where she currently is residing and teaching art at an art center.
  • Exhibitions include the National Association of Women Artists, NY, Empowered Women International, Gallery West in Alexandria, the National Geographic, NBC4 gallery, Torpedo Factory and the Embassy of Afghanistan in Washington DC.
  • She was a Finalist in the Experimental category at the 23rd Art competition of The Artists Magazine.
  • She taught drawing, watercolor classes and portraits at the Dr. Oswald Durant Memorial center at Alexandria, VA and in her private home studio. Her other teaching experiences included teaching art classes in the Art program of Michael's Store Inc, VA ,USA, at the Institute of Fine Arts affiliated to Peshawar University, at Hunarkada, the Academy of Visual and Performing Arts, at Ameena Degree Collage in Pakistan and at the Department of Fine Arts at University of Kabul Afghanistan.
  • She was the youngest artist and first woman artist in visual arts to be granted membership in the Afghanistan National Association of the Artists.
  • In 1995, Fatana founded The Maimanagi Art Center in Pakistan to provide art services, learning opportunities and hope for talented Afghan refugees struggling to cope with displacement.
  • As an illustrator and designer, Fatana has received illustration assignments from many international organizations and individual sources included the United Nations and U.S based organizations. Her illustrated children’s books, and illustrated short stories published in Children Magazines are loved by children of all ages and are a considerable contribution to children’s art and literature of Afghanistan.
  • She has established the Baktash Art Creating Center to produce a variety of illustrations, designs and art work projects, serving individual customers, businesses and organizations.
  • She authored Painting and Its Status in Afghanistan, published by the Ministry of Culture of Afghanistan and has other writings ready to be published.
  • She is graduated from the distinguished Maimanagi Art School of Kabul, the Fine Arts Department of Kabul University, and the Thompson College of Education Direct in the United States.
  • Fatana’s art and interviews have been published and broadcast worldwide through The Voice of America Ashina TV, The Washington Post, publications of the Embassy of Afghanistan, Asumayee TV, Radio Free Europe, BBC Radio, Zeba Magazine, Omaid Weekly, Dewa Magazine, Sahar Magazine, Sabawoon Magazine, Afghanistan National Television, Afghanistan Today and Kabul Times, among others.
