Afghan Artists... Fine Art Masters of Afghanistan
Afghan artists are emerging on the international art scene. Through these pages, we want to introduce you to a couple of generations of master artists of Afghanistan. There are actually still a couple Afghan art masters still alive who were students of the founding "Ustads" of the modern Afghan fine art movement. As you meet these talented men and women expressing themselves through paint, collage, and sculpture, remember that because the majority of the artists produce art considered un-Islamic by the Taliban, they still fear for their lives if they are caught. Because Afghanistan's modern fine art is such a new movement in the art world (less than 100 years old!) we are collecting information on how particularly Afghanistan Fine Art is developing post-Taliban. I have interviewed many of these in-depth interviews of the masters, either in person or via e-mail. However, I have also found that in telling the story of art in Afghanistan, it is helpful to the preservation of Afghanistan's cultural heritage to write down the history presently contained in oral memory at the Afghanistan National Archives, Afghanistan National Gallery, and National Museum. It is my hope that this modest effort to collect this information will inspire scholars and art professionals to research and assist in these efforts to tell Afghanistan's art story.
